What are the different types wedding photography?

Planning your wedding means having to conduct a lot of research into every aspect of the big day, from bridal gowns and suits, accessories, flowers, and even the food to be served at the wedding breakfast.

It can mean keeping abreast of the latest trends and fashions. But while you are no stranger to clothing or food, and know what you want, it can be difficult knowing what you are looking for with your wedding photography. We demystify the different styles to help you make an informed decision about your wedding photography.

Natural, documentary and reportage ( my preferred style)

These terms are pretty much the same style, where photography is ‘in the moment’, and your photographer will let the day flow naturally, largely avoiding posed and formal shots.

Many photographers will include a mix of natural shots and posed and group shots, so be sure to ask your prospective photographer how much of each they will shoot. Ensure that their style fits in with your vision of the day.

Fine art

These shots are very posed, and very fashion-forward, like the cover of a glossy fashion magazine. These pieces typically make standout pieces to hang on your wall. If you are interested in this style, make sure you see more than one example of the photographer’s work, as seeing a full gallery will give you a better impression of what to expect.

Contemporary

For images with a modern twist, then you might want a contemporary photographer. The photographer will likely not capture more of the traditional elects of the day, for example, the couple clinking glasses, cutting the cake and signing the register, and focus on capturing emotion and the story of the day,

Creative & alternative

From a creative photographer, you should expect the use of interesting techniques and angles to create one-off photos. Each image will be quirky and interesting to look at. Not focused on traditional photo opportunities. Don’t expect a selection of images that will tell the story of the day in the same fluid way as you get with documentary photography.
