How to get the best out of your Family Photoshoot

Family photos are an amazing way to celebrate what makes your family unique and capture some happy memories.  But for some parents the thought of taking family photos can sound more stressful than enjoyable.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way!  With an experienced and fun family photographer behind the lens and a bit of preparation it can be a great fun, relaxed and joyful experience that rewards you with some gorgeous natural photos that can be treasured forever.

Here are my 5 steps for a stress free photos session with your kids.

Choose the best time

As a photographer I always want to shoot in the best natural light, but that might not work for you.  I can work around lunch time and naps and you’ll get the best results if your kids aren’t hungry and tired.

Prep your kids in advance

Tell your kids about the photoshoot well ahead of time.  Tell them what to expect.  Let them know how excited you are about it and why your family is doing it.  If you’re excited, they will definitely catch your enthusiasm.

Let them be involved

Include your kids in the planning process, ask them what colours they think you should all wear or if there are any shots they would like to get.  Help them pick out an outfit, this could be from the wardrobe or even at the shop.

As your photographer I’ll explain what’s going to happen and how it works to help them feel more relaxed in front of the camera.

Kids who feel part of the decision making process are more willing to participate.

Bring back up

Make sure you are prepared, bring supplies.  Nappies, drinks, snacks, favourite toy, blanket and a change of clothes as you never know what can happen.

Have lots of fun

For me, this is the most important thing.  There are no rights or wrongs, as long as you are having fun and feeling comfortable then this will be reflected in the images.
